Aerial surveys carried out during spring and summer

October 10, 2024

News from Nuclear Waste Services:

Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) have been carrying out marine aerial surveys off the coast of East Lindsey from April to October 2024.

The first surveys of this type were conducted during October 2023 – March 2024. These have continued throughout the spring and summer months to capture further data over the changing seasons.

The next survey is planned to take place on Friday 11 October.

Monthly aerial surveys looking at birds and marine wildlife are due to take place until October next year. This will provide the environmental assessment team with at least 2 years of survey data.

Two planes have been flying each month, on the same day between approximately 11am and 4pm. The planes fly at a low altitude, at least 1600ft (500m) height in accordance with recognised best practice and high enough not to disturb the wildlife being observed.

The surveys are dependent on the weather in terms of the visibility, cloud height and the state of the sea. Flight dates may change as a result.

These marine aerial surveys will provide NWS with information on the presence and numbers of birds and marine wildlife in the area. Together with other environmental surveys, they will provide baseline data as part of the work to understand if an area is suitable for a Geological Disposal Facility.
