Another chance to be part of the Big Picture

July 24, 2023

This summer more Big Picture events are on offer to answer people’s questions about geological disposal.

The first film themed events took place earlier this year and following a successful series of Q&A style sessions more dates and venues have been announced.

Feedback from the events was encouraging and showed that people were interested in finding out what is involved in geological disposal and in the process of exploring the potential for hosting a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) in the area.

A team of geologists, engineers, and nuclear and environmental scientists will be visiting six locations to chat to people and answer their questions, to help them understand what geological disposal is.

Theddlethorpe GDF Community Partnership, are hosting these events to encourage people in the area to come forward, ask questions and find out more about what a GDF could mean for the community.

A GDF is an underground facility designed to dispose of higher activity radioactive waste safely and securely. The Community Partnership is a group made up of local people, local authorities, and Nuclear Waste Services, (the GDF developer), to consider the potential of hosting a GDF within the identified Search Area, which includes the electoral wards of Withern and Theddlethorpe and Mablethorpe.

Jon Collins, Interim Chair of the Theddlethorpe GDF Community Partnership, said:

“Our Big Picture events held earlier this year were well received, and it was good to see people chatting to industry experts about the topics that matter to them and asking questions.

“We are continuing to hold these events to fulfil our commitment to allow everyone to take part in the conversation and find out more about a GDF. Increasing the number and range of these events provides further opportunities to be involved and we encourage the community to come along and find out information for themselves.”

People attending The Big Picture will be able to view a selection of short films, then take the time to speak with a team of experts and have the chance to get answers to their questions and information on the GDF project.

A model of what the GDF surface site could look like will be on display, alongside items of interest such as fuel rods, and geological rock samples, plus maps and information boards, where people can post comments and questions on key topics.

Big Picture events are taking place on the following days:
