Partnership respond to Council recommendation to withdraw

February 12, 2025

Chair provides statement from the Community Partnership.

Cllr Craig Leyland, Leader of East Lindsey District Council (ELDC) today signalled his intention to recommend that the council withdraw from the Community Partnership and the reasons for this. ELDC has been an important member of the Community Partnership, and we thank the council, and Cllr Leyland as their authorised representative on the Partnership, for their contribution.

We will continue to support the dialogue between the community, Nuclear Waste Services and Lincolnshire County Council on things that are important to people in the GDF Search Area, and make sure that relevant information is shared.

The Partnership is made up of people who live or work in the community as well as representatives of the developer and local government, including the Parish and Town Councils. We will shortly be seeking to fill several vacancies, and given the recent announcements by NWS and ELDC, this is a good time to bring new voices onto the Partnership.

The GDF siting process is unlike other developments in this area, not only in its scale and long-term impacts, both positive and negative, but also in having a Community Partnership where local people can discuss matters directly with the developer. The Partnership has voiced its frustration at people’s sense of disempowerment but recognises that steps are now being taken to address this.

The Community Partnership wants to ensure the community receives clearer and more timely information and have their questions answered on the short and long-term implications of a Geological Disposal Facility.
